How to view SVG Thumbnails

How to view SVG Thumbnails

This guide contains screenshots from Windows 10, but the steps are essentially the same if you are using a different version of Windows.

Often times when you install Inkscape or other software the file association for SVG files is changed so you no longer see thumbnails of the files, they may appear as Inkscape icons (see screenshot below), or you may be used to double-clicking an SVG and viewing them quickly in Internet Explorer.

First, you need to have the SVG viewer extension installed.  You can download it from the link below.  If you receive a warning that the file is corrupt or something to that effect, use a different browser.  Chrome or Firefox usually works well.

You will need to know if you have the 32 or 64-bit version of Windows for this extension.  To find this information, go to Control Panel and System on your Windows computer.

Download the SVG View Extension Here

Once you have downloaded the file, go to your downloads folder to double-click on the file to install it.  If you wish to see a video of how to install the extension, click here.

After installing, it's best to reboot your computer and allow it several minutes to get everything loaded after logging back on.

Post-Install Steps

When you view your folder of SVG files, you may have to now re-associate the files with Internet Explorer to see the thumbnails.

Right-click on an SVG file and choose OPEN WITH and select CHOOSE ANOTHER APP (this may appear slightly different if you are not on Windows 10)

Next, check the box at the bottom that says "Always use this app to open .svg file", then select Internet Explorer, then click OK.

When viewing your folder of SVG files, be sure to select a thumbnails view and you should now see your SVG files.
